Discovery
The goal of the discovery phase of the graphic design process is to develop an overall goal for the project and to define the context for the work to be delivered.
It is important to ask questions such as:
- Who is the intended audience?
- What is the message to be delivered?
Design / Production
This is where you begin to brainstorm and conceptualise ideas. As the designer your goal should be to develop some new and different concepts that will deliver your message in a way which sets them apart from other short films.
There are a couple of simple methods which can be used to spark the creative thinking process and some of the one’s you may find beneficial are:
- Discussing the ideas with other people
- Visit a museum or gallery to enjoy the work of the masters. This can also help define a visual style or spark the formulation of a design concept.
- Read a book about graphic design, branding or something similar. Often a small piece of information can plant the seed of a new concept. Use the magazines in the LRC to help you with this.
- Doodle. Rough outlines can help even if you are not a fantastic artist.
Once your design inspiration kicks-in it’s time to get work fleshing out a few concepts before opening up Illustrator or Photoshop. Once you’re confident that you have 3 solid concepts discuss your concepts with others and pay attention to their feedback.
Development
This is the production and development of a final concepts for the project which outlines the overall look and feel. It is a very good idea to keep all the versions developed for future reference.
